Discovery and origin of the name

Discovered: In the 1960s in the Umba Valley, on the border between Tanzania and Kenya, which remains the main source of this gemstone to this day.
Meaning of the name: The name “Malaya” comes from Swahili and literally means “outcast”, “prostitute” or “not belonging to the family”.
This unusual name arose because local traders initially refused to buy the newly discovered stones. Their color did not fit into any of the garnet categories known at the time, which is why the stones were considered "undesirable".

Initial scientific classification

In the 1970s it was recognized that Malaya garnets are mixed crystals of the pyrope-spessartine-almandine series.
This discovery was significant because it provided mineralogical proof of a garnet mixed series that had previously only been theoretically suspected.
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) currently classifies Malaya garnet predominantly as a pyrope-spessartine variety, although the composition may vary slightly depending on the specimen.
