Rhodolite was first scientifically described at the end of the 19th century. The American mineralogists William Earl Hidden and Joseph Hyde Pratt examined pinkish-purple garnets from the Cowee Valley in North Carolina and published their findings in 1898.
The name "rhodolite" comes from Greek:
"rhodon" = Rose
"lithos" = stone
Therefore, rhodolite literally means "rose stone" or "rose garnet".
Mineralogical peculiarity
Rhodolite is not a distinct mineral, but a mixed crystal of:
Pyrope garnet
Almandine garnet
Its typical color ranges from raspberry red to purple to rose-violet. It was precisely this unusually bright and vibrant color that quickly made it popular.
Historical significance of grenades in general
Even though Rhodolith itself was only named late, it was already used by:
the ancient Egyptians,
Greeks,
Romans
Red garnets as gemstones and protective stones.
In the Middle Ages, red garnets were often called "carbuncle stones." They were believed to possess protective and light-giving powers. Some legends even tell of a garnet giving Noah light on the ark.
Sites then and now
The first famous rhodolite finds were in North Carolina, but these deposits are now largely exhausted. Modern major deposits are primarily located in:
Tanzania
Madagascar
Sri Lanka
India
Brazil
Use today
Rhodolite is particularly popular today:
as a gemstone
in high-quality rings and pendants,
as well as in esotericism as the so-called "heart and friendship stone".
With a hardness of approximately 7–7.5 on the Mohs scale, it is well suited for jewelry.
